Emeritus Professor Dr Muhammad Bin Awang

Muhamad Awang is an Emeritus Professor at the Faculty of Environmental Studies, Universiti
Putra Malaysia and has retired as first Vice Chancellor of SEGi University. In UPM he
was appointed as a Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs between Jun 16, 2000 and April
7, 2005. Prior to that he held several administrative positions including Acting Vice Chancellor,
Deputy Vice Chancellor In-Charge of Finance and Development, Acting Deputy Vice
Chancellor for Student Affairs, Dean Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies.

He served as an advisor and member of think-tank group to the Ministry of Higher Education
Malaysia on Research, Development, and Commercialization, and subsequently was appointed
as Chairman of Technical Committee for the Establishment of Public Research Universities. He
also serves as a resource person on behalf of Ministry of Higher Education and Malaysia
Productivity Corporation (MPC) for the assessment of University Good Governance practices in
Malaysian Higher Education Institutions. He chaired Climate Change Technical Committee for
Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) and served as a committee member for the International
Council of Science (ICSU) in Asia and the Pacific Region (2005 2010), and Council Member
of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (2008 2011). He served as a member of Malaysian
Environmental Quality Council (EQC) for more than 15 years (1994 2009), an appointment
from the previously known as Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment Malaysia.
He was also the Chairman of National Sub-Committee 5 - Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)/TC
207/ISO 14000 series of Environmental Management Standards. He was a member of National
Strategic Plan for Higher Education (PSPTN) Review Team for the establishment of Malaysia
Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) which was recently launched by the Prime
Minister.

He received his PhD specializing in air pollution and vegetation from the University of Sheffield,
U.K.in 1979. During his academic and professional career, he has published numerous articles
(more than 350 papers) in refereed journals, chapters in books and proceedings at local and
international workshops, seminars and conferences. His primary research, teaching and
consulting focuses on impacts of atmospheric pollutants and climate change on ecosystem
physiology of tropical rain forests species and agricultural crops, and also on environmental
standards with special reference to life cycle assessment and design for environment.
