Introduction

The Department of Forest Management was established in 1973 with the aim of producing professionally trained graduates in the field of forest management. To achieve this, the department offers the Bachelor of Forestry Science With Honours programme. In addition, the department also provides the infrastructure and human capital for forest management research and extension services to society.

The Bachelor of Forestry Science With Honours programme is multidisciplinary which includes components such as forest management, biodiversity, silviculture, hydrology and economics. In addition, students are given exposure to professional training in public agencies and private companies to improve their soft skills and problem solving capability.

The academic staff of the department are from various specialization related to forest management. Research and consultancy services on forestry provided include biodiversity, hydrology, biotechnology, restoration, inventory, entomology and economics. 

The department is well equipped with essential laboratories for teaching purposes such as soil science, biotechnology, forest operation, hydrology, entomology, pathology, seed technology, information technology, physiology, forest ecology including a herbarium. Specialized instruments available include the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), carbon hydrogen nitrogen and sulfur analyzer (CHNS), atomic absorption spectrophotograph (AAS), biochemical oxygen demand incubator (BOD), atomic bom calorimeter, laser hypsometer, high pressure flow meter (HPFM), Portable Photosynthesis System, gel imaging, incubator shaker and instruments related to realtime polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR).

With combination of the human capital and equipment available, the department offers academic courses to enhance knowledge and skills in forest management.
