ERASMUS GRANT MAKING 4.0

The Faculty of Forestry and Environment is UPM’s representative in the international funded Erasmus+ grant MAKING 4.0, which is a project funded by the European Union for the duration of three years. The project leader at UPM is Professor Dr. Jegatheswaran Ratnasingam of FHAS. The following is a brief introduction of the project and its objectives.

 

INTRODUCTION

MAKING 4.0, the European-Malaysian consortium project entitled Improving Malaysian HE Knowledge Towards a Wood and Furniture Industry 4.0 is an effort aiming to avail an innovative international Master’s degree programme related to Industry 4.0 (I4.0). Tailor-made for professionals, engineers and skilled manpower of the smart furniture factories, MAKING4.0 emphasizes on the required ICT skills for boosting the competitiveness of the woodworking and furniture industry of Malaysia.

Classified under the Capacity Building in Higher Education of the European Union’s ERASMUS+, MAKING 4.0 project is manned by the European-Malaysian consortium of four participating European institutions and five Malaysian institutions. Over thirty members are involved towards realizing a high-level training on technological trends and advances related to industry 4.0. While targeting to uplift students, participating Malaysian industrial players, and unlimited interested parties, participating partners are mandated to encourage internationalization in accordance to the “Bologna Process Implementation” guidelines emphasizing inclusivity, accessibility and competitiveness.

 From the lenses of the Malaysian wood and furniture sector which is currently generating MYR 8 billion export revenue and projected to skyrocket to MYR 23 billion in 2020, MAKING4.0 project serves as a gateway to the government’s nation-building and manpower development goals. This mirrors the prominence of the European Commission co-funded project as a means of realising the Industry 4.0 through a higher degree programme in line with the national Industry 4.0 Policy Framework.

 

OBJECTIVES

  1. To develop an innovative Master’s degree to modernize the current training offered in wood and furniture technology processes pertinent to Industry 4.0 in Malaysia.
  2. To create an innovative learning pathway that equips higher education students with the most important competencies and skills related to Industry 4.0.
  3. To promote cooperative activities and provide more opportunities for students to gain the specific and transversal skills required in the wood and furniture industry.
  4. To push active collaboration and partnership between Europe and Malaysia in order to obtain an impact on creativity, modernization and internationalization of higher education fields related wood and furniture industry.
  5. To boost the 4th Industrial Revolution in the timber industry of Malaysia as the technological frontier amongst all Asian manufacturing industry working towards a smart and sustainable industry.

 

The consortium partners include Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM); Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM); Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM); Universiti Teknologi Mara Malaysia (UiTM); Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB); Warsaw University of Life Sciences (WULS), Poland; Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany; Technical University of Cartagena (UPCT), Spain; Technological Centre of Furniture and Wood (CETEM), Spain. The consortium leader is UPCT and this project has a duration of 3 years (2018 – 2021). Project No. 598783-EPP-1-2018-ES-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP-MAKING 4.0.
